Professional Key Duplication in Tampa

Why Hardware Store Keys Sometimes Don't Work

Keys cut at hardware stores and big-box retailers are made on automated machines that are rarely calibrated and often use low-grade brass blanks. The result is a key that technically "looks right" but has dimensional tolerances loose enough that it binds in the lock, requires jiggling, or wears the lock pins faster than the original. Over years of use, we've seen keys cut at hardware stores that were technically within spec but failed intermittently because the machine's cutting wheel was worn by 0.003 inches. Our cutting machines are calibrated regularly and we use premium key blanks from verified suppliers. We also test-fit every key in the actual lock before we leave — something no automated kiosk does.

Key Origination — Making a Key When You Don't Have One

If you don't have an original key to copy from, we can still make you a working key through a process called key origination. For residential locks, we can disassemble the cylinder, read the pin heights, and cut a key to those depths. For vehicles, we look up your key code from industry databases using your VIN. For high-security locks, we originate from the lock's code stamped on the cylinder face. Key origination is significantly more involved than simple duplication and costs more, but it's the only way to get a working key when the original is truly lost.

High-Security Restricted Keys — What Makes Them Different

Standard house keys can be duplicated at any hardware store because the keyway (the specific profile of the key blade) is not patented. High-security key systems from Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and Schlage Primus use patented keyways that are legally protected — only authorized dealers can cut these keys. The locks themselves use sidebar mechanisms that detect key angle as well as height, meaning even a key that's cut to the right depths won't work if the sidebars aren't cut correctly. We're an authorized dealer for major high-security brands and can cut restricted keys with your authorization card. If you're moving into a property with existing high-security locks and need additional keys, bring your authorization card when you call.

Commercial Key Duplication — Volume and Master Systems

Property managers, office managers, and businesses often need multiple keys cut simultaneously and tracked carefully. We provide commercial key duplication with a documented key issuance log — you know exactly how many copies exist and who has them. For master key systems, we can cut change keys, sub-master keys, or master keys within your existing system without compromising the hierarchy. We work from key codes rather than existing keys where possible, ensuring every copy is cut to original spec rather than accumulated copy-of-copy tolerance errors. For commercial accounts with ongoing key needs, we offer service agreements with preferential pricing.

Antique Key Duplication

Antique furniture, vintage filing cabinets, old Craftsman bungalows, and pre-war apartment buildings often use bit keys (also called barrel or skeleton keys) that most modern locksmiths don't stock blanks for. We carry a range of specialty blank inventory and have access to suppliers for unusual warded keyways that aren't in standard catalogs. For genuinely rare patterns, we may need to fabricate a key by hand-filing a blank — a process that costs more and takes longer, but produces a working key where nothing else will. Bring the lock if you can — it's easier to cut a proper key from the lock itself than from a worn antique key.

Key Duplication FAQ

Inaccurate cutting is the most common cause. Hardware store key machines use automated cutters that are rarely recalibrated — over time, a worn cutting wheel produces keys that are slightly off-spec. They may work in some locks but bind in others, or work fine initially but cause premature lock wear. We use calibrated professional cutting machines and test every key in the actual lock before we leave. Bring us the key that didn't work and we can often re-cut it correctly.

Yes — this is called key origination. For residential locks, we disassemble the cylinder and read the pin heights directly. For vehicle keys, we look up your code from industry databases using your VIN and proof of ownership. For commercial locks, we originate from the key code stamped on the cylinder. Key origination costs more than simple duplication and requires proof of ownership, but it produces a key that's cut to original factory spec.

"Do Not Duplicate" stamped on a standard key is a request, not a legal restriction — it has no force under Florida law. Any licensed locksmith can cut a copy of a standard key regardless of what's stamped on it, and hardware stores routinely do the same. The only keys that are legally protected against unauthorized duplication are those using patented keyways — Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage Primus, and similar high-security systems that require an authorization card to cut.

As many as you need — there's no practical limit on a single visit. Property managers needing 20 copies of a new tenant key, businesses needing 10 copies of an office key, or contractors needing 5 car key spares are all routine. We can cut all copies in a single mobile visit. Volume discounts apply at 5+ copies of the same key. For ongoing commercial accounts, we offer service agreements with standing pricing.

Yes — but it requires more than just cutting. A transponder chip key has both a cut metal blade and an RFID chip in the head that must be programmed to your specific vehicle. We cut the blade on our mobile cutting machine and program the chip via OBD-II. The full process typically takes 20–45 minutes and costs a flat rate depending on your vehicle. Simple blade copying without programming (for cars without transponders, typically pre-2000) starts at a flat rate.

Both options are available. We maintain a walk-in appointment location at 1902 W Main Street Suite #202, Tampa FL 33607 where you can come to us (by appointment). Or we can dispatch a mobile locksmith with a full key cutting van directly to your home, office, or any location in Tampa Bay. For transponder car keys, mobile service is often more convenient since the vehicle needs to be present for programming anyway.
